The chakra system is an ancient framework that explains what chakras are, how chakra energy flows through the body, and how chakra healing can support your physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Understanding the chakra system is a foundational step for anyone exploring chakra imbalance, energy healing practices, and self-care techniques that help restore harmony to mind, body, and spirit.
The word chakra comes from Sanskrit and means “wheel” or “disk.” Some describe chakras as spinning wheels of energy that exist within the body’s subtle energy system. Others refer to them as energy vortices, or spinning wheels of light.
There are seven main chakras that sit along a central energetic channel of the spine, called the sushumna channel. The chakras connect into this channel, starting at the base of the spine, and moving up to the crown of the head. This channel allows energy to move through the body and distribute it to each chakra.

The life-force energy that flows through this channel is called prana. In many traditions, prana is considered the vital force that supports health, vitality, emotional balance, and spiritual awareness. When prana flows freely through the sushumna channel, each chakra receives the source energy it needs to function smoothly and maintain balance.
While each chakra has a central point in the body, along the spine, these energy centres extend outward through the front, back, and sides of the body, interacting with the larger energy field that surrounds us, which is called the Auric Field, or Aura.
Chakras act as centres of energetic transformation. They receive subtle energy from the world around us, process it through the energetic field, and translate it into information the body and mind can use. In this way, chakras form a bridge between consciousness and the physical body. As you become more aware of what is entering your aura, you can begin to intuitively sense how the surrounding energy is influencing you.
In energy healing traditions, it is believed that everything that appears in the physical body first begins in the subtle energy system. Because energy is always moving, the chakra system functions best when the chakras remain open, balanced, and flowing.
When chakras are balanced and energy flows freely, we tend to feel more grounded, clear, and emotionally steady. When the chakras become blocked, underactive, or overactive, energy flow can become disrupted, which may contribute to physical discomfort or emotional imbalance.
What Information is Held in a Chakra?
Chakras store energetic information connected to our experiences and emotions. They function like energetic libraries, holding lifelong patterns that influence how we interpret and respond to life.
They can hold the energy of:
thoughts - yours or others
emotions - yours or others
beliefs - from family patterning or the collective
memories - of this lifetime or past lives
past experiences and actions
future potentials
Many people exploring chakra healing discover that emotional patterns and recurring life themes often connect to specific chakras. The energetic imprints stored in these centres can shape our behaviours, perceptions, and reactions to life.
In some traditions, these energetic imprints are referred to as karma, meaning the stored energy of past experiences that influences our present responses. Experiences that make you feel unusually reactive are often clues to what may be stored in your chakras and ready to be healed. Chakra healing practices help bring awareness to this stored information so that old energetic patterns can be transmuted, allowing new experiences and perspectives to emerge, offering more ease in moving forward.
As a quick overview, each chakra relates to a particular area of life:
*Lower chakras - influence our physical realm - survival, safety, sexuality, and personal power.
*Upper chakras - influence our spiritual realms - intuition, truth, awareness, life purpose, and spiritual connection.
*The heart chakra - located in the middle of all the chakras, this one acts as a harmonizing force of energy for the upper and lower chakras - by bringing love and compassion into our experience, bringing balance to the physical and spiritual aspects of our lives.
How the Chakra System Affects Your Physical and Emotional Health
The seven main chakras are closely connected to the physical body. Each chakra corresponds with nerve bundles, organs, and endocrine glands, linking the energy system to our physical and emotional health. Because of this connection, many energy healing traditions view chakras as influencing the body’s overall balance.
When the chakras are open and aligned, energy flows freely and supports vitality, emotional stability, and mental clarity. The physical body will be more balanced and function more effectively.
When a chakra becomes blocked, depleted, or overactive, energy may not move as easily through the body. Over time, this can contribute to feelings of fatigue, emotional stress, or physical discomfort and sometimes illness.
Since the mind, body, and energy system are interconnected, bringing awareness to an imbalance in one area can help restore balance in others. For example, you may have to balance one chakra, to bring harmony into another.
Practices such as chakra meditation, energy healing, breathwork, and mindfulness are often used to help support this balance.
How to Connect with Your Chakras and Balance Your Energy
Developing awareness of your chakra system is the first step in supporting chakra balance and energy flow.
People experience their chakras in different ways. Some people see colours or spinning energy in their mind’s eye, while others feel sensations in the body or notice emotional shifts connected to specific chakras. A healthy chakra system includes chakras that are generally balanced in size, vibrant in colour, and flowing at a natural rhythm.
A simple practice to connect to your own chakras, is to sit quietly and focus your awareness on each chakra individually.
Notice what comes up when you focus with intention on this chakra:
What feelings or emotions arise?
Use your hands and see if you can feel the vibration of the chakra. How does it feel? Where does it end in the field of space around you? What does the border feel like?
What color is it? (you may not see it - but you may get an intuitive hit)
Are there any words that pop into your head? Use these for clues about what you might want to clear from it, using your hands in a sweeping motion to do this.
Other practices that can help you connect to your chakras can include:
* meditation
* yoga
* energy healing practices such as Healing Touch or Reiki
* sound healing
* crystal healing
* acupuncture
* visualization practices
* Journaling
Whatever you choose, play with it and have fun!! With practice you will be able to get more accurate information and be able to clear some of these things yourself.

(PS: don't practice this on anyone else without proper training - this beginner fun is just between you and your higher self - and to help you develop your intuition for self care😇)
With proper maintenance and awareness, energy will flow more smoothly through the chakra system, and the body will feel more stable and grounded. This means a more regulated nervous system, emotions, and physical health. However, our bodies and energy systems are constantly shifting between states of balance and imbalance. Because of this, subtle chakra imbalances can sometimes be difficult to notice until they become more pronounced.
Supporting the body through healthy lifestyle practices can help improve and maintain energetic balance, which will help you to better connect with your chakras. These include:
* nourishing food
* spiritual and physical detoxing
* restful sleep
* movement and exercise
* time in nature
* supportive relationships
* reducing screen time
* mindfulness and relaxation practices
Awareness, intention, consistency and patience are some of the keys to success!
